ode to lew (eau de loo)
by carolyn victoria mill - 2004
~
make something! he said
and please make it quick
think not long on what
but do make it stick
well i do as i'm told
at least tell what i do
so with verse i shall testify
in my ode to lew
~
tis worthy fare this
though you may think me wrong
to praise one so elongated
in tooth, and in song
but the short story goes
and the people do say
that your hard work and hope
are the new way to pray
so drink deep this verse
see it through to the end
in another 50 years
we shall do it again

~
a ballad for the bard
most deserving of due
when a benevolent captain
or a gracious road crew.
there are oceans of sound
shored up by you
mixed and mined
with that old soul glue.
and those sixteen tracks
have left a sure trail
that ever plays true.
in every detail
baked fresh in the hearth
of your home, or away
it could take 60 seconds
it could take all day
then on through the night
'til the morning pales
though with so many stars
the light never fails
strong spirits distilled
and hungry minds fed
open hearts painted
with rich shades of red
it does colour your records
crowns your grey head
with bands so well traveled
and harmonies wed
telling taller tales still
of vast vistas toured
mapping worlds of fine fools
their ladies, and lords
whose tables well laid
their memories stored
from sharing your bed
and groaning sound board
now we give thanks
for you fill us right up
our wide empty arms
and ever deep cups
hussah!
hussah!
hussah!
and what price this toast?
for pockets so deep
'does not cost a shilling
tho great tribute you reap
for if you spend yourself freely
and we know that you do.
giving more than you have
there is no charge for you
~
so let's unstop the bottle
and open the clouds
the choir will sing
and cry out loud
for this chalice of ages
made of wisdom's fine sand
half a century's worth
enough for one man
though today is your day
its not yours to keep
only to share
and now even to speak
so testify true
of fortunes and friends
from the seeds new beginning
to the leaf's flaming end
speech!
